SMBR Reviews Steps to Control Smog in The Province

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority is continuously monitoring every activity of line departments for controlling smog on a daily basis. Action has been accelerated for the closure of smoke-emitting vehicles and farmer-committees are working in rural areas to control the burning of stubble. Similarly, the industries department is taking action against factories and brick-kilns for emitting smoke. More steps will also be taken and an organized mechanism has been activated to identify the ratio of smog in the air. This was stated by Relief Commissioner Babar Hayat Tarar during a meeting about control of smog through PDMA on Tuesday. The PDMA apprised the Relief Commissioner that a fine to the tune of one crore, seventeen lakh and 900 rupees has been imposed from 20 to 31 October for controlling the smog. Similarly, 2841 FIRs have been lodged, 23275 vehicles have challaned and 3706 vehicles have been impounded while 204 industrial units have been sealed. The provincial capital topped with regard to smog-related pollution; the maximum smog level in Lahore was 414 till the end of October while the ratio was 281 today morning (November 3). He was told that Rs.2069254 fine has been imposed during the first two days of November. 164 FIRs have been registered, 6584 passengers have been challaned besides impounding 386 vehicles. 29 industrial units were also closed. The local government department imposed Rs.58500 fine and lodged 41 FIRs. Rs.506754 fine was imposed to control encroachments and 14 reports were lodged. Meanwhile, water was sprinkled at 6387 places and 621 roads were repaired. The Relief Commissioner directed the line departments to ensure immediate implementation on the devised plan in case of increase in smog ratio adding that use of facemask should be ensured and outdoor activities should be minimized in smog-hit areas.
