Most Areas of Punjab Will Continue to Experience Intense Heat Throughout Week: PDMA

Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority Imran Qureshi has highlighted the current weather conditions as per the meteorological department.

He mentioned that most areas of Punjab will continue to experience intense heat throughout the week, with a likelihood of a gradual increase in daytime temperatures until June 24. In upper and central Punjab, including Islamabad, temperatures may surpass the normal range by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius, while southern Punjab may witness an increase of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. With rising temperatures, the demand for electricity and water is expected to rise, necessitating appropriate measures to ensure adequate water supply for crops based on seasonal requirements.

DG PDMA further emphasized the potential dangers of negligence during extreme heat and outlined precautionary measures to prevent heatstroke. These measures include staying hydrated by regularly consuming water and fluids, protecting the neck and head with a cloth when exposed to the sun, using hats or umbrellas, avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities, wearing loose and light-colored cotton clothing, refraining from exertion and exercising during intense sunlight, avoiding sitting in closed cars under the sun, consuming suitable food for hot weather while avoiding high-protein meals that can increase metabolic heat, avoiding crowded places, seeking shade and cool areas, and paying special attention to the well-being of children and elderly individuals during hot weather.

Imran Qureshi also advised seeking immediate medical attention in case of excessive sweating, headache, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, or yellowing of the skin, as these could be signs of heat-related complications.

To ensure public safety, the DG PDMA stated that instructions have been issued to the provincial administration and relevant departments to raise awareness about preventing heatstroke and to ensure adequate arrangements are in place. Additionally, he stressed the need for the health department to establish specialized wards for heatstroke patients in all hospitals across the province.
