Advisor on Health Punjab Kh. Salman Rafiq inaugurated mother and child health week at Government Filter Clinic Wahdat Road today, which will continue till June 4. Secretary Primary and Secondary Health Ali Jan Khan, Director General Health Dr. Mukhtar Hussain Syed, Additional Secretary Health Dr. Nusrat and representatives of UNICEF and other international partners were present on the occasion.
During mother and child health week, infants and pregnant women will be vaccinated against diseases while lady health workers will spread the message of health education from door to door for the promotion of the culture of hygiene. Children will also be given de-worm pills. As many as 46504 lady health workers and more than five thousand community workers will participate in the programme. Awareness programmes will also be arranged for highlighting the importance of child delivery under the supervision of trained birth attendants so as to control morality rate among pregnant women. Community midwives will conduct checkup of women during this week. Kh. Salman Rafiq visited various stalls set up at the health fair. He said that control over mortality rate among pregnant women and newborns is a big challenge and health experts and lady health workers will have to make concerted efforts to deal with this issue.
