Provincial Minister for Irrigation & Chairman PIDA, Mian Yawar Zaman has said that farmer organizations should be further strengthened for effective contact with the people at basic level so that public support could be available to launch timely relief activities in flood situation.
He stated this while presiding over a meeting of officers of Irrigation Department and PIDA to review flood situation today. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that farmer organizations can prove to be an important source of direct contact with rural people as representatives of these organizations are included in canal management after formal training. He said that all representatives are fully aware of performing government affairs therefore, important duties regarding relief activities can be assigned to them. He said that canal reforms introduced by PIDA have yielded important and positive impact.
He said that in this way, the confidence of people has increased in water sector. He said that public suggestions have also got place in evolving government policies. He said that farmers are our important stake-holders and their direct participation has helped in necessary look after of large canal structure due to which non development expenditures have reduced. He further said that the scope of this programme started for the welfare of farmer community will be expanded throughout province.
