Provincial Minister for Population Welfare Begum Zakia Shahnawaz has said that purpose of observing world population day is to highlight the economic and social aspects of the growing population.
In her message on World Population Day on July 11, the Minister said that there is a need for a balance between resources and growth of population for achieving progress and prosperity. She said that there is a need for taking all out measures for controlling rapidly growing population in Pakistan. Begum Zakia Shahnawaz said that Pakistan’s population has increased 6th time since creation of the country and it is the 6th biggest country with regard to the population. She said that large portion of the Pakistan’s population is living below the poverty line and a woman dies every twenty minutes due to complication in pregnancy. She said that Punjab government is promoting public awareness regarding the problems created by rapidly increasing population. She said that migration, illiteracy, desire for maximum children especially of male children are the reasons for increasing population. Begum Zakia Shahnawaz further told that seminars have been arranged in various districts of Punjab with regard to World Population Day while banners and posters have been displayed. She said that essay writing and poster designing contests have been organized in nine districts of Punjab regarding the negative impact of fast growing population and prizes will be distributed among winners.
