PIDA Acknowledges Public Power in Reducing Water Theft

Provincial Minister for Irrigation and Chairman PIDA, Mian Yawar Zaman has said that public representatives should play their active role for checking water theft in their constituencies so that canal water could be distributed in a justified manner. He further said that trend of water theft can be reduced to a considerable extent with the cooperation of public representatives.
                   
He stated this while talking to Provincial Assembly Members in his office. Senior officers of Irrigation Department and PIDA were also present on the occasion. The Minister said that Punjab government is utilizing all resources for checking canal water theft. He informed that necessary amendments have been proposed in the light of experiences of experts in the relevant laws regarding water theft and formal approval of Punjab government will soon be taken. He said that instructions have been issued to the officers of Irrigation Department for taking indiscriminate legal action against water thieves which would be strictly implemented.
                   
Mian Yawar Zaman said that interest by elected representatives for checking water theft and effective implementation of law is vital in this regard so that poor farmers could get their due share of irrigation water on time. He asked public representatives to identify government employees involved in water theft in their respective areas so that departmental action could be taken against them.
