Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Imran Qureshi visited the Flood Forecasting Division ( Meteorology Dept) along with Director (Operations) Nasir Sani and others on Tuesday.
Chief Meteorologist Chaudhry Muhammad Islam and senior officers of the Meteorology Department gave a briefing to the DG PDMA in the committee room and informed them that the monsoon and flood season will start on June 15 and continue until October 15. Preparations are underway to fully activate the control room of the Flood Forecasting Division for this purpose, they added.
The Chief Meteorologist stated that compared to last year, this year's rainfall is expected to be lower and to assess the weather conditions in Punjab, 09 automatic weather stations are operating, allowing daily monitoring of weather conditions, including all rivers and streams in Punjab.
DG PDMA also visited the control room to observe the monitoring of water flow in rivers and streams, including the alert system for weather and water flow.
DG PDMA said that the coordination process with line departments is ongoing to protect the people from floods and other disasters. He mentioned that the early warning system implementation and awareness during the monsoon and flood season can ensure the protection of lives and property. Monitoring of water flow in rivers and streams is a top priority during the flood season, and monitoring of nullahs in hill torrents will also be ensured. He added that measures are being taken to prevent urban, flash, and river flooding, and the situation will be monitored from the PDMA's provincial control room as well as the control room of the Flood Forecasting Division.
