Punjab has reached a significant milestone in its social protection efforts, with more than 1.6 million people benefiting from a range of welfare programmes across the province. The achievement was highlighted during a high-level review of ongoing initiatives aimed at supporting low-income and vulnerable communities through targeted financial assistance and social support schemes.
Key programmes contributing to this outreach include the Ration Card, Himmat Card, and Minority Card schemes, each designed to address specific segments of society. Over 1.4 million individuals are currently receiving monthly assistance under the Ration Card programme, while more than 100,000 persons with disabilities have benefited from financial support through the Himmat Card, with plans to expand coverage further.
The Minority Card initiative has also provided quarterly financial assistance to thousands of deserving individuals from minority communities, reflecting a broader commitment to inclusive welfare. In addition, supportive measures such as the distribution of assistive devices and the organisation of collective marriage programmes have further strengthened social safety nets for underprivileged groups. Officials say the expanding welfare framework is part of a wider strategy to reduce economic hardship and improve quality of life across Punjab.
